Curious about how coaching can actually change your brain? Science backs it up! Scroll down to explore an intriguing study on the link between coaching, creativity, and problem-solving.
Research on the Effectiveness of Coaching
A Spanish study, “Right Cortical Activation During Generation of Creative Insights: An Electroencephalographic Study of Coaching”*, explored how coaching impacts the brain during problem-solving and goal achievement. It compared three approaches:
Rumination: Solving a problem on your own by repeatedly thinking it over.
Directive Coaching: The coach provides instructions, advice, or solutions.
Non-Directive Coaching (NDC): You lead the conversation and choose the topics. The coach helps you reflect, think creatively, and find solutions using your skills, offering support without steering.
The results showed that non-directive coaching sparked more creative ideas and insights. Brain scans revealed significant changes in certain frequencies during NDC sessions, highlighting its power in enhancing creativity and problem-solving.
My coaching style is rooted in non-directive coaching and the solution-focused approach developed by clinical psychologist Marilyn Atkinson, founder of Erickson Coaching International.
